  • Acne is a common occurence in nearly every person at one time or another in their life, and all to often, for a long period of time.

    What is Acne?
Acne is a disorder resulting from the action of hormones on the skin's oil glands, which leads to plugged pores and outbreaks of lesions commonly called pimples or zits. Acne lesions usually occur on the face, neck, back, chest, and shoulders. Nearly 17 million people in the United States have acne, making it the most common skin disease. Although acne is not a serious health threat, severe acne can lead to disfiguring, permanent scarring, which can be upsetting to people who are affected by the disorder.

What kinds of Acne are there?
Acne Vulgaris is the most common form of acne, and include several types of pimples. These acne lesions include blackheads, whiteheads, papules, pustules, nodules and cysts.
Acne Rosacea can look similar to the aforementioned acne vulgaris, and the two types of acne are sometimes confused for one another. Occurs usually in people over 30.
Severe Forms include Acne Conglobata, Acne Fulminans, Gram-Negative Folliculitis, Pyoderma Faciale.

    What Causes Acne?
Exact causes of acne is unsure, however doctors believe there are several related factors. One main factor is an increase in hormones called androgens. Androgens increase in both sexes during puberty and cause the glands to enlarge. Hormone changes related to pregnancy or starting or stopping birth control pills can also cause acne. Another factor is heredity or genetics.

    Acne Myths
Chocolate and greasy foods are often blamed for causing acne, but foods seem to have little effect on the development and course of acne in most people. Stress also does not cause acne.
